Biography
Betty was born 7 December 1924 in Indiana, the daughter of Omer E. Denoon and Mable Walton. Census information for 1930 indicates that her father worked as a traveling salesman for a beauty equipment company.[1]
Betty was married twice. Her first husband was a businessman, Walter W. Gerlach, whom she married 9 February 1941 in Santa Ana, Orange County, California.[2] They were the parents of one child, a daughter. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1944.
She married the actor Sterling Hayden 25 April 1947 in Santa Barbara, California. "Sterling Hayden Married Again. Santa Barbara, Calif., Apr 26 (AP)--Actor Sterling Hayden and his second wife, non-professional Betty Ann de Noon, of Pasadena, were honeymooning today aboard his sailing vessel int he Pacific. They were married yesterday in an informal ceremony at Montecito Presbyterian Church by Reverend Paul Gammons. Hayden formerly was the husband of actress Madeleine Carroll. His bride was once married to Walter Gerlach, Pasadena businessman."[3] They were the parents of four children: Christian, Dana, Gretchen and Matthew. They were divorced. After their divorce there was a bitter custody battle over their children, which was resolved when Hayden was granted custody. Hayden then took his children sailing in Pacific in spite of a court order. The couple married and divorced three times, with the final divorce in 1955.
According to her obituary, Betty was "a free spirit from an early age and had a vibrant personality that was driven by a fierce intelligence and an intensity that made a deep impression on all who knew her."[4]
During her career, Betty worked for "the University of California, Los Angeles, first in the Theater Department and eventually as the administrative assistant to the chairman of the School of Dentistry. She was a strong advocate for the Peace and Civil Rights Movements. "[5]
She passed away in 2008. [6]
